GOBAR DHAN- A Visionary Scheme for Better Life in Villages

GOBAR-DHAN which stands for Galvanizing Organic Bio-Agro Resources Dhan is a visionary scheme which was launched by Ms. Uma Bharti (the then Union Minister for Sanitation & Drinking Water) and Mr. Manohar Lal Khattar (Chief Minister of Haryana) on 30th April, 2018. India first heard about the scheme during Union Budget Session 2018-2019 when it was announced by Late Mr. Arun Jaitley (the then Finance Minister).

A Segment of Swacch Bharat Abhiyan (Clean India Mission)

We are all aware of Swacch Bharat Abhiyan (Clean India Mission or Clean India Initiative) which was started by our Honorable Prime Minister, Mr. Narendra Modi. This mission has been close to Mr. Modi’s heart. The GOBAR-DHAN scheme is a segment of Swacch Bharat Abhiyan which is aimed at improving the living conditions in Indian villages and making them open-defecation free. This scheme will particularly focus on utilizing the waste into useful energy.

The solid waste of animal dung and fields will be converted into fuels, for example bio-gas and bio-CNG. Leading biogas upgradation companies like Atmos Power have welcomed this initiative because it will help India become cleaner and also rich in terms of energy. Our environment will also get benefitted because of the initiative.

Education for People under the Scheme

This scheme also includes educating people about utilizing cattle dung and converting it into energy. The animal waste and waste found in fields can be converted into useful fuel, biogas and manure. Biogas to CNG plant experts will be included to educate people.

India is a country with the highest cattle populace across the world. We have a cattle population of about 30 crore which produces over 30 lakh tonnes of cattle dung every day. Utilization of such a huge amount of cattle dung will not only make India pollution free, but will also help India produce cleaner fuels. According to biogas purification companies, the GOBAR-DHAN scheme is aimed at encouraging farmers utilize the cattle dung and also see it as a source of income and not just waste. With an increased ability to produce cleaner fuels, we can gradually move to biogas and biogas to CNG.

In year 2018 alone, about 5000 gaushalas with an average of 400 cattle were included in the scheme. About 621 dairies were also covered under the GOBAR-DHAN scheme.

There are plenty of benefits of the GOBAR-DHAN scheme which includes improved cleanliness, new livelihood opportunities, electricity saving, environment protection, increased self-reliance in terms of energy, increased income for farmers to name a few.
