India all poised to get Rs. 2 trillion investments for CBG plants

India has always been a key market for the entire world since ages and this is especially true when it comes to biogas production. The country will attract investments of Rs. 2 trillion for the setup of more than 5000 compressed biogas plants in India, said petroleum minister, Dharmendra Pradhan later last year. Pradhan was addressing an event post signing an MOU for setting up 900 compressed biogas plants across the country. These CBG plants are part of the visionary SATAT initiative by the Indian government. SATAT stands for-Sustainable Alternative Towards Affordable Transport.

The MOUs were signed with the most renowned brands such as Torrent Gas, Adani Gas, JBM group and Petronet LNG. But that’s not it! MOUs were also signed with technology providers such as Praj Industries, CEID consultants, Indian Oil, and Bharat Biogas Energy for setting up biogas plants in India.

Pradhan also informed that about Rs. 30,000 crores of investment is estimated in these 900 plants. He added that a crystal clear roadmap has been prepared and the MOUs were aimed at 900 compressed biogas plants in India, while letter of intent for 600 biogas plants have already been given. The total investment for 5000 plants will be a whopping Rs. 2 trillion, said the petroleum minister. SATAT is a key initiative by the government of India which is aimed at increasing the production and availability of compressed biogas as an affordable and clean alternative for transportation. That’s because compressed biogas has immense potential and it can help reduce fuel import by a significant margin which will be no less than Rs. 1 trillion. Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has also included compressed biogas in the priority sector and that speaks volumes about the government’s emphasis on the production of CBG.

There are a number of benefits of the SATAT initiative. Farmers, rural areas and tribal will also get benefitted with the initiative. SATAT is an initiative that demonstrates multi-pronged approach. Apart from the inclusion of agricultural waste, animal husbandry waste, marine waste and forest waste, the initiative also includes a liberalized policy regime to facilitate ease of business, financing and technology support and off-take guarantee and all of this is in order to double the income of farmers whilst increasing employment generation and producing clean energy. Biogas purification plants will also ensure an all-round sustainable development which will open several avenues from fuel generation, employment generation and economic development view-point.
